From the 1998 Detroit Music Awards ProgramIf you're trying to maintain your coolness and poise while hanging out on the scene, the last thing you want to do is lose control of your rock'n'roll. But the tables have been turned on the Detroit music scene ever since Martin M. and Dick Valentine (né Jackson Pounder) went into the basement and emerged with the runaway underground hits that comprise the Electric Six (formerly The Wildbunch) debut seven-inch "I Lost Control (of My Rock and Roll)." Ace guitarists Surge Joebot, Rock and Roll Indian, and bassist Disco soon joined the duo in time for the initial photo session. Thus one of Detroit's finest-clad, hardest-rocking live and studio combos was born. Born in Berkley, raised in Troy, constantly partying in Hamtramck, the Electric Six (formerly The Wildbunch) has been earning its Detroit audience the hard way through its combination of musicianship and showmanship, psychedelic confusion and new wave robo-balladry, calisthenics and plain old rock'n'roll. Lately it's been either capacity crowds or out-of-town showcases for this most volatile of all bunches. For a band that boasts about losing control of its rock'n'roll, these guys always command a tight discipline while on stage, as you shall soon see. Give them a couple of bonus points for creating music that's band-name appropriate. On wax, look for them in the local bin, recording for the Flying Bomb and their own Uchu Cult labels. |
