From Rock Sound, December 2002
Live Review of 10.22.02 show @ The Pressure Point, Brighton UK
Tonight Detroit's Electric Six (formerly The Wild Bunch) premiere their disco rock hybrid in Britain. Singer Dick Valentine is bursting with nervous energy from the very start. He growls like Captain Beefheart, veers off into spectacular histrionics and grooves along with the infectious melodies - of which there are plenty. He urges you to join in the celebration, even taking part in the round of applause that follows each song. The guitars of Surge Joebot and Rock'n'Roll Indian explode into action with almost every chorus. It is a mesmerising and confident performance. The ridiculously joyous 'Gay Bar' is like the rifferama of Ministry after some happy pills. Whereas the camp foolery of their - now infamous - 'Danger! High Voltage' is definitely Kiss does disco, as Dick strips down to a T-shirt that reads 'Sexy and Rich', this is a band where rock'n'roll sparkles in glorious technicolour.
