Live Review of 10.23.02 show @ The Barfly @ The Monarch, London UK
A man called Dick who looks like Jim Carrey acting out a biopic of David Byrne on stage has no right to be such a sexy, fire and brimstone frontman.
That one guitarist resembles a seedier version of the beardy one in Basement Jaxx adds to the look of heightened idiocy in front of a crowd about four times the official capacity of 150.
It's only their second UK gig, yet many here are already yelling for the decadent 'Gay Bar' and, um, straight cover of 'Radio Ga Ga'.
While their 'Danger! High Voltage' single features fellow Detroit resident Jack White, the 6 take their Memphis lineage from Prince's yelps, lust and funk.
At times, especially feverish opener 'Dance Commander', the effect is of Jimmy Somerville fronting Chic.
Minus Dick's warped energy, they're set to divide opinion more than any of the most-likely-to crop. His aim was to "give you the best dance party since Seal". They achieved that as, yes, the tunes are killer.
8/10
