The Ballade of The Electric Six (formerly The Wildbunch)

WlLD IN THE STREETS: The streets of Hollywood are said to be paved with broken hearts. Or broken something. But a recent alliance in La-La Land wasn't enough to crush the spirits of Detroit rock'n'roll roughnecks The Electric Six (formerly The Wildbunch). No strangers to these parts, the band were in town last night for an appearance at Club Shanghai--with local act Satan's Arch Enemy G.O.D.--fresh from a sour courtship with L.A.'s Disney-backed Hollywood Records. According to drummer Martin M, The Electric Six (formerly The Wildbunch) let Hollywood Records people buy them dinner, but quickly realized the big-money label might not exactly respect them in the morning. "We hooked up with a ridiculous producer and he tried to turn our single, The Ballade of MC Sucka DJ, into a hip-hop novelty song," he says with a laugh. "The whole point of the song is that it's this full-on, white-boy rock'n' roll tune that pokes fun at phony white rappers. We'd look pretty hypocritical trying to pass ourselves off as a hip-hop group.
"Y'know, to send up Michael Jackson, Weird Al Yankovic doesn't shave off his moustache," he adds. "We're the same way."
Figurative moustache intact, The Electric Six (formerly The Wildbunch) are currently entertaining offers from a few more savory suitors. For now, The Ballade Of MC Sucka DJ, and the recent Surprise Package EP--the latter contains a supercharged version of Ennio Morricone's theme to The Exorcist II--are available through Detroit's obscure Flying Bomb label.
