LOCAL BEAT: THE BAND TO SEE IN DETROIT

Detroit's music scene is much weirder and more diverse than the Hard Rock Cafe would have you think. And the current distillation of all things rock in the Motor City is the Electric Six (formerly The Wildbunch), whose clever absurdity and penchant for excess make it the rock 'n roll incarnation of Hunter S. Thompson; recent gigs include a throwdown at a strip bar and a revisionist high school prom at a former transvestite bar. The Electric Six (formerly The Wildbunch)'s double-axed, so-tight-it's loose sound recalls early Devo just outpacing Black Sabbath, and it's managed to trap punks, fashion plates, and scientists alike in its web of conspiracy theories, alien visitations, technology, and occasional Kraftwerk covers.

The 'bunch was formed in 1996 by frontman / songwriter / erstwhile weatherman Dick Valentine and drummer / producer Martin M., who recruited guitarists The Rock & Roll Indian and Surge Joebot and bassist Disco, then released an astounding EP in late 1996 called, "I Lost Control of My Rock & Roll."

After commandeering every stage in Detroit, the 'bunch was dragged west to Los Angeles' A&M Studios to record some material. One listen and you'll reconsider your archaic Bob Seger / Motown notions of "Rock City" Detroit.
